How do I protect my
new product?

There may be various aspects of a new product which are protectable. Registration of your Intellectual Property will allow you a monopoly to exploit your idea and prevent competitors from making, selling or importing the same or a similar product.

Patents

In general, a patent protects the function of a new product and is not limited to any specific product you may have devised.  Patents can therefore provide an extremely powerful monopoly right for preventing competitors from developing competing products using the same underlying concept as your invention.

Trade Marks

Registered trade marks are typically used to protect the name or logo of a product or business.  However, registered trade marks can also offer much wider protection for other aspects of your branding, for example, they may be used to protect the shape of the product or its packaging, a slogan, colours, or an associated jingle.

Designs

Registered Designs protect the visual appearance of a product or its packaging. Registered Designs can often be used in tandem with patent and trade mark protection.
